Multimillion Rand gym opens in Westonaria

A multimillion rand gymnasium has been completed in Simunye, Westonaria and is ready to be used by the public.

This state of the art facility was officially opened by Councilor Nonkoliso Tundzi, the Executive Mayor on Friday 7 November. The event was attended by a multitude of residents from various areas in Westonaria.

Officials involved in the opening were impressed with the development. Mayor Tundzi exclaimed that she was blown away by the progress made at MPPC and particularly the gym.

“We are impressed by the progress we are seeing today,” said Mayor Tundzi. She also encouraged the MMCs and people who worked on the physical development to be the first ones to use the gym and start promoting healthy living and wellness.

According to Mayor Tundzi, “The municipality will continue to support and assist Westonaria residents by providing them with equipment, facilities and other resources required for development of sport and recreation.”

The municipality through its Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR) section is working hand-in-hand with the provincial Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation for the operation of the gymnasium. The Department of SARC would like to make the gymnasium a Satellite Academy Center for the larger West Rand area.

This academy is expected to have biokinetics, sports medicine and science as well as other specialties. It will also include the following seven priority codes; athletics, boxing, cricket, football, netball, rugby and swimming.

Services that will be provided by the academy with then include coaching, medical assessments and screening. In addition, it will also offer psychological assessments and interventions, life skills, career counselling and guidance.

The opening of this state of the art gymnasium is one of two big municipal happenings in Westonaria over the last two months.

Community members are waiting with bated breath to see whether a next big development will occur in the area.
