Mayor urges youth to apply for bursaries

'Applications close on 18 November so take advantage of the opportunity'

Randfontein Executive Mayor Sylvia Thebenare has set aside R1,5 million for a bursary scheme. It is aimed at pupils keen on furthering their education but who are unable to do so financially.

Applications are open and the mayor urges the youth of Randfontein to apply for a bursary as the closing date is around the corner. Applications close on Tuesday 18 November.

Spokesperson for the Executive Mayor, Lucky Chiya states, “There will be no more extensions as the independent adjudication panel is scheduled to start with the selections. The mayor has expressed concerns that the application turnout is not impressive.”

They plead with the youth to take advantage of the opportunity.

In the bursary information brochure, Randfontein Local Municipality stipulates that it acknowledges the responsibility it has to empower the residents of Randfontein to engage meaningfully in the economic development of the country.

“Contrary to the notion that certain people are prioritised, the bursary fund is meant for all pupils regardless of race, colour, or creed,” Chiya says.

Application forms are available from the office of the Executive Mayor at the Randfontein Local Municipality at the corner of Pollock and Sutherland Street as well as on the Randfontein Local Municipality website.

The criteria for the bursary include South African citizenship, Grade 12s applying with their Grade 11 marks, as well as matriculants that have passed with university exemption.

Another prerequisite is that applications should be hand-delivered to the mayor’s office. Those who obtain the forms online are advised to print them out and also hand-deliver them to the mayor’s office.

“Hurry! Hurry! Don’t be left out and miss the opportunity to change your life for the better,” says Chiya.
