No confidence motion submitted against Mayor

Alleged misappropriation of municipal funds have been brought to light.

DA councillors serving in the Randfontein Local Municipality have put through a motion of “No confidence” against Mayor Sylvia Thebenare.

The motion was submitted in October following a series of what DA councillors claim to be alleged misappropriation of municipal funds.

They have acted on rule 16 (1) of the Rules of Order of Council in drafting documentation for the speaker with regard to issues to be discussed in the following municipal meeting. In the documentation supplied to the speaker, they have highlighted three specific reasons for the motion.

The motion will be under the authority of the speaker to decide when the alleged issue is to be brought up in a municipal meeting. Should the meeting be set, a vote will be taken by members of the Randfontein Local Municipality to decide on whether they agree or disagree with what the DA councillors have put through.

Should the majority of the members vote in agreement of the motion, the mayor will be asked to step down. Members in the council within their fractions then will put forward candidates deemed worthy and another vote will be taken to determine which fraction’s candidate will take over.

However, should the majority vote to oppose the motion, Sylvia Thebenare will continue her duties as mayor of Randfontein.

Spokesperson for the executive mayor of Randfontein, Lucky Chiya says “the matters you have raised in your enquiry are before Council and will be debated in the next Council meeting, unfortunately we cannot pre-empt the outcome of the Council meeting at this stage”.
