Fun walk turns into fun sprint

Men and women took to the streets to promote cancer awareness.

Early Saturday morning women and a few men took to the streets to promote cancer awareness.

The 5km fun walk was organised by Bonolo Masigo, Keoagile Rokgang and Lesego Tsholo from the Reboagile Bokamoso Foundation from Mohlakeng, Westonaria.

The morning was greeted with drum majorettes and the thumping of a bass drum.

Prior to taking to the streets young women gathered at a popular local venue to be informed about breast cancer and self-examination.

Nico Siko from the Department of Health informed these young women on when and how to conduct a self-examination. He states that breast cancer does not exclusively affect women, but men as well.

Afterwards the crowed took to the streets and was cheered on by onlookers and motorists who were forced into driving at a snail’s pace.

They set out to walk from a popular local venue in Mohlakeng to Randfontein and back. The event turned out to be a fun run or sprint rather than a fun walk. A few women raced down the road of the venue over what became an invisible finish line.

Most of the women took to the streets again shortly after returning, claimed the distance was not far enough.

Upon returning participants were met with food, courtesy of the venue, and a testimony of a woman who survived cancer.

Of the three organisers, two have lost close family members to the disease and they are determined not to have it take the lives of more people.

The organisers were pleased with the response from the community and wish to have more such events to create awareness about issues that affect the community.
