Hammer killer sentenced to 18 years

Justice for 25-year-old victim with case closed within just eight months.

A 28-year-old man, Jabulani Radebe received an 18-year prison sentence for the murder of Sandile Hadebe in Mohlakeng last year.

On 22 December 2013 in the early hours of the morning Hadebe, 25, was involved in an altercation with an unknown man at a 21st birthday celebration in Mohlakeng.

According to Randfontein Police spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst, “The partygoers defused the situation and the unknown male left the party. Later the same morning the unknown male returned and hit Hadebe with a hammer.

“She was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries. A case of murder was opened and Radebe was arrested.”

The case was heard in the High Court sitting in Palm Ridge where advocate Masedi of the National Prosecuting Authority prosecuted and Judge Mabesela was on the bench.

“The case was well presented in court and according to the investigating officer the witnesses were professional and contributed positively to the prosecution’s case,” Ernst adds.

In August Radebe eventually was found guilty of murder and sentenced in September. Leave to appeal against the sentence was refused.

Randfontein Police management congratulated the investigating officer, Constable Jabulile Simelane on a task well executed.

“Her investigating skills and perseverance are applauded,” Ernst concluded.
