Earthquake felt in Waterpan

Resident claims it was worse than the one in August.

A third earthquake in just a few months allegedly was felt in Waterpan earlier today.

Although the herald could not establish if it in fact was an earthquake, a resident living in the area, David van der Lith begs to differ.

He says, “An earthquake occurred at 11.49am today. I was sitting on the couch when the floor underneath me started to shake. The windows rattled and after two seconds it was over. Even my cat jumped up and ran off.”

Van der Lith claims it was worse than the 5,4 magnitude earthquake two months ago and the most recent 4,6 magnitude earthquake in Westonaria during September.

“At first I thought it was dynamite at a nearby mine. But I’ve living here for eight years and the treble I felt definitely was not dynamite.”

After doing some research the herald found that earthquakes in and around Randfontein are not uncommon.

According to earthquaketrack.com, despite the previously reported earthquakes in August and September, five other earthquakes were recorded in either Westonaria or nearby towns such as Klerksdorp and Fochville.

Two separate earthquakes occurred in Westonaria two years ago with a magnitude of 4,7 and 4,0 while three others occurred in Orkney four months ago (4,9 magnitude), Fochville three years ago (4,0 magnitude) and Klerksdorp four years ago (4,7 magnitude).
