Residents beware: Dangerous scammers out to target you

Orapeleng Mere warns the community to be vigilant of a robbery scam that now has him living in fear.

Local resident Orapeleng Mere urges the community to be vigilant of three suspects who offer people a job with the intention of robbing them.

Mere explains that he was leaving Village Square Shopping Centre on 6 October when he noticed two men standing across the road. As he was walking to the train station, one of these men approached him, offering him a part-time job.

“The man told me the job would entail me counting safety helmets for a nearby construction site and they would pay me as soon as the job is finished,” says Mere.

“When I asked the suspect where this job is, he pointed in the opposite direction of the nearby construction site.”

At that time Mere noticed the second man already was trying to fool another man into the same scam.

“I knew this was some way of getting their victims into isolation in order to rob them. I then confronted the man and after a brief argument both men got into a dark blue Toyota Conquest that was parked nearby,” says Mere.

He adds that a third man was sitting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.

“Although they did not succeed in robbing me or the other gentleman, I managed to write down their registration number before they drove off,” says Mere.

Mere warns the Randfontein community to be on the lookout for this dark blue Toyota Conquest with registration number MYH 725 GP.

“The suspects, however, did notice that I took down their registration number and now I live in fear as they might come back.”
