Westonaria fire: Six businesses affected

Fire allegedly started at warehouse.

There has been no reported casualties following Thursday afternoon’s raging fire that affected at least six businesses in the Westonaria CBD.

Emergency services on scene informed the herald that the fire started in a warehouse – estimated to be 400 square metres in size – situated in Edwards Avenue. Motorists were cautioned not to make use of the road.

At around 2pm people scrambled to safety as the fire filled the air with smoke.

According to eye witness Henry Boyce “The fire was spreading rapidly” and described the situation as “chaos.”

Police and all emergency services from Randfontein and Westonaria were quick to attend to the scene.

Boyce added “They (emergency services) did an excellent job in containing the fire.” He even went so far to say they were “impressive”.

The chief of the Westonaria Fire Department will release a full statement on Friday.
