Informal traders’ cries finally heard

The MEC held a meeting to hear their challenges and to find solutions.

Informal traders in Randfontein and its surrounding areas can breathe a sigh of relief.

This after MEC for Economic Development in Gauteng Lebogang Maile has made a promise to have talks with the Department of Public Safety not to confiscate hawker’s goods.

This is according to the West Rand Informal Traders Forum president, Dalikhwezi Mvala who says this was revealed at a meeting initiated by Maile where their concerns were addressed.

“The purpose of the meeting was for the MEC to consult with informal traders. I’m glad we also were invited.

“We discussed challenges we as informal traders are facing, which were noted,” says Mvala. He is confident in the MEC’s approach and adds that he is on the right track.

Meanwhile, an informal trading project is expected to be launched in all regions within Gauteng to ensure that informal traders understand their contribution towards the economy.

According to Mvala the MEC also promised to review the municipal by-laws throughout Gauteng to ensure that informal traders’ interests are taken into consideration.
