Who’s to blame for RDP house saga in Brandvlei?

MEC allegedly blames "unnamed" opposition parties for the damages.

The Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Local Government and Traditional Affairs reportedly has hinted that other political parties may have had a hand in RDP houses in Brandvlei being vandalised.

This was in response to questions from Democratic Alliance (DA) spokesperson on Housing, Mevyn Cirota who asked about the 292 houses in the area that remain vacant.

According to media reports, Mamabolo said “unnamed political parties were responsible for encouraging their members to vandalise and occupy the RDP houses”.

This comes in the backdrop of reports that the houses, which had cost approximately R16 million to build, were vandalised and became a haven for vandals and drug users while beneficiaries remain in shacks.

In response Mamabolo’s initial response was that they would look into this and the houses would be revamped by March 2015. At least 20 houses have been renovated fully thus far.
