Cutting down trees causes outrage

Residents up in arms, contractor says it poses a danger.

Residents are up in arms after trees had been cut down at Riebeeck Lake in Randgate.

They believe this destroys the look of the already dilapidated lake are.

The herald was inundated with calls from residents who say that if trees are continued to be cut down at the lake, there will be nothing left and the environment will be depleted of the oxygen the trees produce.

The herald went to investigate and spoke to Frederick Meyer, the contractor appointed to do the job. He says, “We were appointed by the municipality to cut down all the blue gum trees here at the park and they even marked them for us.

“This is simply because they were starting to collapse and this obviously poses a danger.” Meyer adds that residents should not be concerned about the trees being cut down as they already are a hazard to people who use the park.

The herald tried to speak to Patricia Tshitema, manager of the Parks Department. However, she declined to comment about her involvement in the matter and referred the herald to mayoral spokesperson Lucky Chiya. He was not available for comment at that stage.
