W’aria municipality under investigation

Results only to be released after three months.

Allegations of corruption and maladministration within the Westonaria Local Municipality will be investigated, the Auditor General announced on Monday.

According to Gauteng Co-operative Governance Department spokesperson Motsamai Motlhaolwa, “The investigations hopefully will lead to the conclusion of problems within the municipality.

“If there are issues of corruption and maladministration, I think its important that we get the facts,” says Motlhaolwa, adding that the process will take three months and that the outcome will be made public.

This promise comes after months of violent protests in Bekkersdal, which made headlines in national media.

Residents of the area destroyed public property to the tune of millions in a bid to have their outcries heard. They demanded that Westonaria’s mayor Nonkoliso Tundzi together with the people in her office be relieved of their duties.
