Randfontein Executive Mayor Sylvia Thebenare swapped her fancy clothes for her sweater and track suit pants when she took to the streets during her Women’s Month marathon initiative this past weekend.
Thebenare says, “This was to commemorate Women’s Month and promote a healthy lifestyle among women.
“This marathon was held to symbolise the Women’s Day march that took place on 9 August 1956 where 20 000 women from all walks of life took to the Union Buildings in Pretoria where they challenged the pass law of that time.
“The marathon symbolised the strength of women as well as the need for women to start coming together and stand together in societies,” says Thebenare who practically outdid everyone in the marathon.
“The event also was held to gather women and discuss issues that are pertinent to them and how to take responsibilities of their own lives,” she says.
