Social media gives you away, police warns

'It gives criminals information about where you are and what you are doing.'

Social media might be fun but there is that evilness to it as well.

“Checking in on social media platforms, especially facebook, results in people revealing their locations wherever they go as well as their activities during this time,” Randfontein Police spokesperson Appel Ernst warns.

“It gives criminals information about where you are and what you are doing, making it easier for them to target you or your home.”

Ernst adds that while some people may find this fun and a way to boast about the places where they hang out, it is important to note that this may come with serious consequences.

“We have over a million people on social networks and the trend of checking in has become very popular. However, people do not realise that this can be used against them and often makes them a target for criminals.

“Criminals are also on social networks and they can target your home or you.”

Ernst suggests that people should refrain from revealing their locations on social media networks.
