Municipality to investigate raw sewage being dumped in dam

Municipality points fingers at nearby mines.

The West Rand District Municipality (WRCM) gave the assurance that they would investigate reports that raw sewage is being dumped into the Wonderfontein Spruit.

Spokesperson Dennis Mangope indicated on Tuesday (26 August) that the problem could lie with the nearby mines and added, “The municipality is aware of the problem and steps will be taken to sort this out”.

The herald reported earlier that litres of raw sewage from Bekkersdal and other neighbouring areas were found dumped in the Wonderfontein Spruit below the Donaldson Dam in Westonaria.

“As to the Donaldson Dam waste-water problems, three pipes cross the dam from Toekomsrus, Mogale City, Randfontein and parts of Bekkersdal,” Mangope explained. “We are not sure which pipe is messing up the dam; however the West Rand District Agency and Westonaria Municipality are investigating it.

“It is also worth noting that we have an ongoing problem with the radio-active material from the nearby mines polluting the dam and we have requested Sibanye Gold to intervene urgently.”

Mangope also made it clear that the WRCM will ensure that these challenges are attended to and will continue to protect the environment.

  1. Yes, its always easy to pass the buck. When will this become unacceptable? Raw sewage make people sick!! How many people in Randfontein are currently ill? And how is it all linked with everyone being sick? When will it kill?
Easy to investigate, but will something be done and who will be held accountable?
