Marikana – The Musical at the State Theatre this October.

Marikana – The Musical returns to the State Theatre after a successful run at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival 2014.

The musical by Aubrey Sekhabi is and adaptation from the book “We are Going to Kill Each Other Today – The Marikana Story, by Felix Dlangamandla, Thanduxolo Jika, Lucas Ledwaba, Sebabatso Mosamo, Athandiwe Saba and Leon Sadike.

According to the www.statetheatre.co.za website “It is a blow by blow account of what happened when the miners downed tools on the 9th of August 2012 until that fateful day as explained by Lucas as follows: ‘Tomorrow morning the men will sing again. Their spears, pangas, inculas and sticks will clatter menacingly. They will recite battle cries from their homelands and move about in organized columns, raising clouds of dust. But 34 of them will sing for the very last time’.

In 16 August 2012, after a standoff of several days, the South African Police force opened fire on mineworkers armed with traditional weapons, who had gathered on a koppie at Marikana in the Northwest Province in defiance of their employer and their trade union.

A total of 44 miners were killed. The ensuing massacre made headlines and shocked the world all over.

The cast is led by Meshack Mavuso, Aubrey Poo, Segomotso Modise, Emma Mmekwa and includes supporting cast of over 18 members.

Marikana – The Musical will also go back to the villages and townships where they came from and give faces and names to the fallen brothers, sons, fathers and uncles.
