RHS pupils taught self-defence

Local gym teaches youngsters a few tricks on how to defend themselves in sticky situations.

Pupils of Randfontein High School were shown a few tricks on how to defend themselves in sticky situations yesterday.

This thanks to a self-defence campaign initiated by Fit Stop Gym.

According to the local gym’s general manager, Mark Hey, “The training session was a combination of boxing, karate, jiu jitsu and normal exercise.

“Exercise is really important in one’s life and self-defence even more so. We find that our children are more familiar with fighting and not defending themselves, and that’s a problem. We then decided to teach them the difference between the two and how to throw a few punches as well as to get physically fit in a good way,” says Hey.

He emphasises that this is not to promote violence but merely equipping the youngsters with the necessary knowledge of self-defence when faced with certain situations. According to him, this also will help empower them physically to avoid hijackings, attacks and other violent crimes.

The herald also spoke to the Grade 12 Life Orientation and Physical Training teacher Agri Zondi who says a healthy body often leads to a healthy mind.

“We welcome Hey’s efforts to come to the school with his team to teach our pupils these skills. It is of the utmost importance that we get our children off their couches at home and exercise a bit,” says Zondi who adds that this also will promote a healthy lifestyle.
