Local road to recieve R370 million upgrade

Upgrade said to be completed in 24 months.

The N12 Road in Westonaria will receive a massive upgrade worth R370 million this year.

This was announced by MEC for Roads and Transport in Gauteng Ismael Vadi who launched the project today (28 July) and said that the rehabilitation will benefit residents of Westonaria Local Municipality, Merafong City and those who fall under the City of Johannesburg

The road in question runs from Westonaria to Johannesburg and even connects to North West among other places.

According to Vadi, “The initiative is undertaken jointly by the government and other private sectors. We will be refurbishing the 40km road within the next 24 months and we expect things to run smoothly where time frame is concerned.

“We also expect that the relevant parties stick to the budget allocated and absorb local labourers,” says Vadi.

He added that 40 percent of the work will be done by local contractors and says that this will help bridge the unemployment gap within the relevant communities.

He says that he together with the people in his office will be facilitating the project and oversee that all things are good and well over time.

Meanwhile, the Herald spoke to Westonaria Local Municipality executive mayor Nonkoliso Tundzi who welcomes the project and says that the initiative will result in local economic growth.

“We are really happy with the project and we feel that it’s a response to a need raised by residents where the rehabilitation of roads is concerned. Again, this is just proof in the pudding that we are a caring government,” says Tundzi.
