Grave-like trench a safety risk

Ward councillor fears the worst.

A large trench of four metres deep, almost like a grave, on the pavement along Malan Street in Randgate poses a huge safety risk.

And Local Ward 4 Councillor Sina Erasmus fears the worst.

The herald went to the site to investigate and found that the trench neither was cordoned off nor was there any signage warning against the safety hazard anywhere to be seen.

According to Erasmus, “This problem was reported to the municipality over four weeks ago. I cannot tell you how many times we have complained about this to the Randfontein Local Municipality and still, nothing was done.

“Pedestrians use this side of the pavement on a daily basis and we obviously are concerned about their safety. If in daylight it is this difficult to spot until it is almost too late, one can image what it is like in the dark,” Erasmus says.

She adds that it’s really a matter of time before someone falls into the trench and injure themselves.

“The Randfontein Local Municipality constantly ignores issues that matter most,” Erasmus continues.

The herald also has tried to contact the Randfontein Local Municipality head of communications Phillip Motshiwa, but he is said to be on leave. A list of questions were submitted to the Randfontein Mayoral spokesperson Lucky Chiya and we await comment.
