Two injured as four cars collide

Two women in hospital after flying squad and three other vehicles collide on Main Reef.

Two women were injured after four vehicles including a South African Police Service (SAPS) Flying Squad vehicle collided at the corner of Main Reef Road and Eight Street yesterday afternoon.

According to eyewitness John Adams, he was standing at the intersection at around 3pm when the accident took place.

Adams explained to the herald that one of the vehicles (identified as a charcoal-coloured Opel Astra) was travelling on Main Reef Road towards Westonaria when the driver turned onto Eight Street. A Gauteng Police Flying Squad BMW was travelling on Main Reef Road towards Krugersdorp when it collided with the Opel.

“The traffic light for both of these vehicles were amber, therefore both the drivers were at risk as the traffic light was about to change to red,” Adams explains.

“The Opel spun and bumped into a gold Ford Tonic before coming to a stop on the sidewalk in front of the Hustler shop on Main Reef. The flying squad BMW then changed direction and smashed into a Volkswagen Polo standing at the traffic light on Eight Street,” he adds.

It’s said that none of the occupants of the flying squad vehicle or the Polo were injured in the accident. Adams adds there were three occupants in the Polo and one police officer in the BMW.

He further explains that there were three occupants in the Opel – one child and two women. While the little girl escaped the accident without any injuries both women sustained injuries and had to be transported to a nearby hospital.
