“Theft of manhole covers is no new thing” — municipality

Local municipality assures residents they will attend to all missing manhole covers.

The open manhole cover problem soon will be something of the past, assures the municipality.

This after another open manhole at the corner of Horingbek Street and Jan Fiskaal Road was discovered. The open manhole is considered life-threatening.

According to local resident Boet van der Wath, this manhole cover has been stolen about three weeks ago.

The herald asked municipal spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa for comment. He sayss that it is no new thing. “In Randfontein, manhole covers are stolen for scrap metal.”

He says that he was not even aware of this specific manhole cover and urges residents to report any missing manhole covers.

Montshiwa assures residents that the Randfontein Local Municipality will conduct an investigation shortly in order to determine where there are missing manhole covers.

“After identifying all the problem areas, we will replace the stolen steel cover with the new concrete covers,” Montshiwa says.
