Drunk traffic cop to be let off the hook?

“Matter still under investigation,” says traffic chief five months after incident.

The investigation involving a local traffic cop who was caught red-handed drinking alcohol while on duty some time ago seems to go nowhere.

This after the herald submitted a list of questions to the Randfontein Traffic chief Kenny Mampondo approximately five months ago about the officer’s conduct. Those questions have gone unanswered to date.

The incident involving the intoxicated traffic cop occurred on 14 February around 1pm at the Randfontein Rugby Club and the herald is in possession of damning images depicting the incident. These have been submitted to Mampondo and his team.

Initially, Mampondo condemned such behaviour saying that it was unacceptable in his office and that the officer in question would be investigated.

Five months later the herald and other members of the public who were outraged at the time are still without answers despite proof having been submitted to Mampondo, who is yet to respond.

On 26 November last year an officer, whom eyewitnesses described as drunk at the time, had run over a pedestrian. One eyewitness was specific saying the cop smelt “like a brewery”.
