Numsa strike: Randfontein calm for now

Workers demand wage increase.

While workers affiliated to the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) downed tools and embarked on a nationwide strike, things seem to be under control in Randfontein.

According to reports, the decision to take to the streets was sparked by a deadlock in negotiations with Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant earlier this week.

During this time, workers were demanding a 12 percent wage increase for all metal and engineering workers across the board.

Members of the union are also demanding the scraping of labour brokers and a R1 000 housing allowance.

The herald will be closely following the strike and will keep you posted with any developments.
