World class flower designs on your doorstep

Leon Hefer is one of the people who helped put together the Gupta wedding in terms of flower design. He was also featured on Top Billing.

Famous Congregationalist Henry Beecher once said that flowers are the sweetest things God ever made and forgot to put a soul into,

One Randfontein resident who would definitely agree with him is Leon Hefer.

Hefer is a well-known and widely respected flower designer with nothing but passion and love for his craft.

With the now infamous Gupta wedding and many other high profile jobs under his belt, Hefer is one of the country’s leading flower designers, with more than ten prestigious awards behind his name.

Apart from supplying beautiful designs for events of every kind, he also provides flowers for many an office reception in Randfontein and across the West Rand.

After finishing his military service Hefer obtained his national diploma in Horticulture at the Cape Town Technikon.

He then fine tuned his skills working for Spoornet as a landscaper where he was responsible for all the landscaping from Langlaagte to Mafikeng.

Hefer moved to Randfontein and established his business here in 2003 and has not looked back since.

Most of the flowers that he uses, he grows himself, and those that he does not have in stock,he sources from other local florists.

“It is the most fulfilling thing I have ever done,” says Hefer.

“The only flowers fresher than mine are ones that are still growing.

“I could never describe how much I love what I do and what it means to me.”

He says that one thing that people don’t know about him is that he is very emotional and that he tends to go above and beyond the line of duty when it comes to his designs.

“People might think that putting together flowers is easy but its not.

“I take everything I do very seriously and I make a point of putting my emotions into everything I do.

“That is how I make sure that I achieve customer satisfaction. I am my own worst critic, so I make sure it is perfect every time.

“Putting together flowers is by no stretch an easy thing.

“Every job is different. You can’t do the same kind of arrangement for a wedding as you would for a funeral, for instance.

“One has to take into account the emotions of the customer and that for me, is what ensures the success of your arrangements.”

His favourite flower is the Strelitzia.

Hefer is a long time member of the well-known local Wisteria Flower Club which has been in existence for 45 years and holds monthly sessions where people interested in flower designs attend and demonstrate their talents.

Their next event is on 2 August at the NG Kerk in Randfontein North.

The flower club is one of the loves of Hefer’s life as it afford him the opportunity to meet with like minded people.

“I can learn from others and they can learn from me and that makes it exciting.”
