Municipal workers to down tools

Union threatens strike action if corrupt municipal officials are not dealt with.

South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) members in Westonaria are threatening to embark on another protest action.

This after the Westonaria Local Municipality, according to the union, failed to take seriously a set of demands posted by the union.

The union has accused Westonaria Executive Mayor, Nonkoliso Tundzi of making empty promises.

The demands include the sacking of Westonaria municipal manager Thabo Ndlovu, who the union has accused of corruption.

The union also demanded the sacking of other non performing department heads within the municipality.

According to Samwu Westonaria shop steward Dumisani Chiya, allegations against Ndlovu include unauthorized payments allegedly made to the acting Chief Financial Officer as well as the approval of unauthorized leave encashment for senior managers.

Samwu further accused Ndlovu of not following the set procedures when appointing senior managers within the municipality.

“We went into talks with the mayor, the chief whip and a mediator during March and April and again recently,” says Chiya.

“During the meetings, our allegations against Ndlovu and others were investigated and found to be true.

“It was agreed that heads would roll and that those who are corrupt will be brought to book.

“But to date nothing has been done.”

He adds that despite their talks and alleged agreements, Ndlovu is still getting his fat pay check from the municipality.

“We cannot agree on one thing with the mayor and her team only for them to do exactly the opposite.

“these criminals have not been brought to book and we want to know why they are being protected.

“If the mayor and her team decide to keep those people then she has to answer us,” says Chiya.

He ads that the union has exhausted all avenues of negotiation with the municipality and is left with no choice but to take extreme measures.

Westonaria municipal spokesperson Kgabane Madiehe has declined to comment of this matter, saying that he would have to look into the issue before being able to comment.
