Update: Dead police officer identified

The officer was found at a mineshaft near the R559 also known as the Randfontein Road. News around his disappearance remain unclear at this stage.

Update: 19 June: The body of the dead police officer found in a veld in Randfontein yesterday has been identified as that of Warrant Officer Thabo Abednigo Mohlaba.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lt Col Lungelo Dlamini, the 50-year-old officer was reported missing by his wife on 6 June after he had not returned home.

“Mohlaba was last seen a the Kagiso Police Station prior to his disappearance.

“From what we understand, he had gone to withdraw money at an Absa ATM in Krugersdorp and never returned home.

“His wife reported him missing the following day “says Dlamini.

He adds that Mohlaba was limping and was wearing a black cap, blue jeans and a denim jacket at the time of his disappearance.

 

18 June: A Kagiso police officer who has been missing since 5 June was found dead this morning (18 June) next to a mine shaft near the R41 in Randfontein.

“We were called out to the scene by mining officials who informed us that they had discovered a body on their premises,” says Randfontein SAPS spokesperson, Appel Ernst.

Ernst could not disclose details regarding injuries to the body, but did say that foul play is suspected and that a case of murder has been opened.

The Herald was referred to Gauteng police spokesperson, Lt Col Lungelo Dlamini for further information surrounding the death of the police officer.
