Child safety month launched in Randfontein

Pupils were taught as to what actions constitute to abuse and which authorities to contact when in need of help.

The Randfontein Local Municipality in conjunction with the Department of Social Development, Randfontein SAPS and other stakeholders launched their Child Protection Week.

This was today (29 May) at the Randfontein Primary School.

Child protection week is marked from 1 to 8 June.

According to one of the key speakers from the Department of Public Safety in Randfontein Shimi Molale, the purpose of the event was to educate pupils about children’s safety as well as promote their rights.

“It goes without saying that social crimes and other forms of crimes are still being perpetuated against children and that is a problem

“In dealing with these we, together with the relevant stakeholders, decided to embark on this campaign to teach pupils what actions actually constitute to abuse and crime.

“We don’t want them to underestimate anything done to them.

“They should know that if it feels wrong, it probably is wrong,” says Molale.

He adds that in line with their mandate, pupils were encouraged to report any form abuse and taught which numbers to call when in such situations

Traffic officers were also at the launch and did a demonstration of road signs in order to curb accidents involving pedestrians

While the representatives were proud of the outcome of the event, they say that they will be touring other schools throughout Randfontein during this month.
