No end in sight to pothole woes

Motorists are often seen driving into oncoming traffic to avoid the dangerous pothole in Lazaar Avenue.

A massive pothole along Lazaar Avenue at the Botha Street crossing has residents of the area up in arms.

The pothole is situated in such a way that motorists are forced to brave swerving into the wrong side of the road and into oncoming traffic to avoid it.

According to Local DA ward councillor Sina Erasmus, she has on numerous occasions pleaded with the Randfontein Local Municipality to fix the many dangerous potholes along Lazaar Avenue, but to no avail.

“I cannot tell you how many times I have reported this one problem and just like every other time, nothing gets done,” says Erasmus.

“The last time that the municipality fixed potholes along Lazaar Avenue, they reappeared a few days later, bigger and more dangerous than before.”

The herald has since approached Municipal Communications Head Phillip Montshiwa who assures residents that the municipality is in the process of fixing potholes in Randfontein.

“We are really working around the clock to ensure that our roads are user friendly and we have published a schedule to that effect.

“I think if anything, we need to reprioritise that schedule to ensure that the most damaged roads receive attention as soon as possible,” says Montshiwa who adds that he will be having talks with the the manager of the Randfontein Department of Infrastructure Peter Mathebula, to discuss ways of doing this.”
