Mohlakeng residents take to the streets

Randfontein motorists had to endure another day of hell on the R28 as protestors block the road.

Local motorists faced yet another gruelling morning on the R28 on 30 April as residents of Mohlakeng Extension 5 blocked off the R28 in both directions at the Segaetso Road intersection as part of another service delivery protest.

According to residents the protest is a last ditch effort to try and force the Randfontein Local Municipality to provide them with proper sanitation, water and electricty.

The protest started at approximately 3am with residents blocking the road with burning tyres and stones.

Randfontein Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo says that the situation is still tense at the scene but law enforcement authorities have everything under control.

“We have been diverting traffic since the early hours of the morning and we will continue doing so until the road is cleared.

“We do advise that motorists use alternative routes to get to Westonaria,” says Mampondo.

He adds that meanwhile, they are still in talks with police officers to see how to best handle the situation.
