Trucks cause chaos on Randfontein roads

"The abundance of truck drivers in the area is now also attracting prostitutes who openly ply their trade day and night.”

Residents are seeing red because of the fleet of trucks that line the R28.

The last time the herald reported on this issue, Wilmar Continentals General Manager Leon Niemand promised that the trucks would be gone in two weeks, but three weeks later there is still no sign that they are ready to leave.

According to local businessman Johan Hammann, the trucks are not only causing substantial damage to local roads. “The trucks are causing all sorts of problems,” says Hammann.

“They shatter concrete manhole and drain covers as well as stormwater drains, start up in the middle of the night while people are trying to sleep,  and the drivers show an utter disregard for other road users, often just stopping in the middle of the road.

To top it all, the abundance of truck drivers in the area is now also attracting prostitutes who openly ply their trade day and night.”
Hammann went as far as trying to block off Mackay Street with concrete blocks to prevent the trucks from lining  up along this road.

“It didn’t help a bit,” says Hammann.

“Just a few days after I blocked the road for them, some of the truck drivers removed the concrete blocks and started parking in our street again.

“They don’t care if they park in front of your gates, blocking you in.

“They simply do as they please.”

The herald once again approached Wilmar Continental for comment on the issue, but they had not responded by the time of going to print.
