Brandvlei protests get out of hand

Residents torched three cars, blockaded roads with burning tyres and concrete blocks, and pelted passing motorists with stones.

Furious residents of the Baderile informal settlement in Brandvlei, Randfontein went on the rampage yet again.

Residents cite insufficient service delivery in the form of clean water, electricity and the provision of houses as the reason for their ongoing protests.

The protest turned violent once again on Friday 25 April and residents torched three cars, blockaded roads with burning tyres and concrete blocks, and pelted passing motorists with stones.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst, residents of the area embarked on the protest in the late afternoon of 25 April and the violence lasted until approximately 7.30am the following morning.

Ernst says that despite the violence, no injuries were reported.

She adds that so far no arrests have been made and the situation is under control.
