Notorious local burglar convicted

The complainant saw the stolen goods at the police station and was able to positively identify them.

The Randfontein SAPS has managed to secure the successful conviction of a notorious robber.

The man, Moffat Majava, was found guilty of two separate incidents of house robberies in Randfontein.

Majava was sentenced to 12 years behind bars on 27 March at the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst, the Majava, was given the sentence after he was arrested on 23 April 2013 by Constable Dumisani Langa who suspected him of carrying stolen items at the time.

“Constable Langa arrested Majava in Homelake after finding the man in possession of suspected stolen property,” says Ernst.”

“He was taken to the Randfontein police station and upon their arrival at the police station, they found a 61-year-old complainant who had just arrived at the police station and was reporting a housebreaking incident which occurred in the same area where Majava was arrested.

“Further investigation led to the identification of some of the items found in Majava’s possession as having been stolen from the complainant.”

She adds owing to this, Majava was then charged with being in possession of stolen items.

“Officers also took Majava’s fingerprints, which positively linked him to another housebreaking incident dating back to 3 August 2012.

“This incident occurred in Mohlakeng.”

Ernst says that during this incident, valuables to the tune of R13 000 were stolen but later recovered,” says Ernst.

She says that the Randfontein police is pleased with the outcomes of the case.

“We commend both Constable Langa and the investigating officer, Josia Moboe for their hard work which led to the successful prosecution.”
