Local councilor laid to rest

This comes after he was stabbed to death by a group of men while responding to a call of duty in the early hours of the morning.

Local ANC Ward Councillor Isaac Lebopa has been laid to rest after he died a brutal death when he was stabbed numerous times by a group of men while walking to a meeting in the early hours of the morning.

The incident occurred on 27 March and Lebopa was buried on 5 April at the Greenhills Cemetery.

According to information received, Lebopa had received a phonecall reminding him about his meeting that was scheduled to take place on the day.

Shortly thereafter, he left his home and was walking to his destination when he was attacked by the group of men who stabbed him repeatedly.

The gravely injured Lebopa managed to make his way to his home where he called the police and the emergency services, but he succumbed to his injuries before their arrival.

It still remains unclear as to whether the stabbing was politically motivated or not.

Meanwhile, Randfontein Local Municipality Executive Mayor Sylvia Thebenare spoke at the funeral and extended her condolences to the Lebopa family and spoke highly of him.

She urged all councilors in Randfontein to emulate Lebopa on his selflessness and his dedication to the people of Randfontein.

“Lebopa was really a great man and may his soul rest in peace.

“He was selfless in his service to the people of this town and we will miss that about him.

“I just wish to thank Lebopa’s wife for allowing her husband to serve the people of Randfontein.

“I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that he will be dearly missed.

The Herald also spoke to DA Public Representative Councilor Paul Francis who worked closely with the late Lebopa in the Municipality Public Accounts Committee (MPAC).

According to Francis, Lebopa was born a leader and it is sad to see that he is no more.

“We really lost a good person.

“Lebopa had a clear understanding of municipal affairs and he was fair at all times.

“He really was a cleaver man as well,” says Francis.

According to the leader of Cope within the West Rand Solly May, Lebopa will be dearly missed.

“One thing I envied about Lebopa was his respect and his selflessness.

“His leadership and his intergrity could not be questioned.

“He is literally one if not the only person within the ANC locally who stood out.

“I can assure you that a person of his calibre will be hard to find within the ANC, especially on the West Rand,” says May.
