Ward councillor stabbed to death

It is currently unclear whether the killing was politically motivated.

Local ANC Ward Councillor Isaac Lebopa has died a brutal death after he was stabbed numerous times by a group of men while walking to a meeting in the early hours of the morning.

This was on 27 March at approximately 5am in Mohlakeng.

According to West Rand District Municipality spokesperson Dennis Mangope, Lebopa, who was a well-known and widely respected member of his community, died while attending to a call of duty.

“From what we understand, Lebopa received a phone call prior to his death reminding him about a meeting that was scheduled to take place on the day.

“Shortly thereafter, he left his home and was walking to his destination when he was attacked by the group of men.

“They stabbed him several times, and he was gravely injured.

“He managed to walk back to his house where he called and ambulance and the police, but he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries before their arrival,” says Mangope.

He adds that nothing was taken from him during the attack and it remains unclear whether the attack was politically motivated or not.

“We are very saddened by the news and it goes without saying that we have lost a cadre who can never be replaced,” says Mangope.

“Lebopa was committed to his job and went above and beyond the call of duty in carrying out his duties.

“Our condolences go out to his family and friends,” says Mangope.

Meanwhile, Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captainl Appel Ernst confirms the incident and says that police are investigating a case of murder.

Lebopa was a councillor for Ward 11 which consists of Mohlakeng Extention 11 and some parts of Extention 3.

Information on when Lebopa will be laid to rest will be communicated in the media during the course of the week.
