Chess inspires the youth

Local chess lover, Benjamin Daniels, uses his love for chess to stimulate and enrich the minds of the youth of Toekomsrus.

Benjamin Daniels decided to use his love for chess to motivate the youth in the community as well as to inspire them to rather take part in sports than in crime.

The owner of Odium BA Business Solutions, Benjamin Daniels, started a chess project in 2010 which is fully funded by his business.

Today this chess project is a huge success and has various participants from all over Randfontein.

“I feel it is necessary to encourage the youth to take part in meaningful activities which will guide them in the right direction and keep them out of trouble,” says Benjamin.

That is why Benjamin now also started to teach chess as a subject at Hartzstraat Primary School in Toekomsrus.

He also arranges chess tournaments for the youth in which they can compete against each other. Although his main focus is the youth, he also hosts open tournaments for older participants as well.

One of these tournaments took place on 29 March at Daniel’s Den.

“I started this initiative to stimulate the mental capacity of our youth. Seeing that chess furthers the concentration span, it helps the children in improving their academic performance,” says Benjamin.

According to Benjamin, they had various successful tournaments during the past couple of years and would like to thank every player for their participation.

“Without the players, my chess project would not have succeeded therefore, I am proud of each player for the difference they made in this programme,” says Benjamin.
