District mayor tables the state of his district

He outlined issues of performance in all four local municipalities under his wing namely Westonaria Local Municipaltiy, Merafong City, Mogale City and the Randfontein Local Municipality.

The West Rand District Municipality Executive Mayor Mpho Nawa delivered his State of the District Address to outline issues of performance in all four local municipalities under his wing namely Westonaria Local Municipaltiy, Merafong City, Mogale City and the Randfontein Local Municipality.

This was on 14 March at the district building’s parking lot in front of over a hundred attendants.

During this time, he focused on issues of basic service delivery, infrastructure, economic development, financial viability, good governance and public participation among other pertinent issues.

According to Nawa, all four municipality’s have fared very well despite challenges encountered throughout the year.

He says that a lot still needs to be done to ensure the improvement on service delivery.

“Collectively, we have embarked on a numerous projects and programmes that have changed the lives of people situated in the West Rand District.

“This can be seen in the R3,9 million spent on the refurbishment of roads by the Westonaria Local Municipality and the funds spent on other projects such as the construction of a new cemetery, and the refurbishment of the existing Bekkersdal taxi rank.

“The upgrading of all the street lights in Westonaria can also be included in this.

“We must also look at the work done by the Randfontein Local Muncipality in bettering the lives of its residents through the refurbishment of the Mohlakeng Stadium in Randfontein as well as the Finsbury and Jabulani Sports Complex.

“Whilst we reflect back at such achievements, we must also appreciate that the Randfontein Local Municipality has improved its spending in the financial year of 2012/2013 as opposed to the previous 2011/2012 financial year,” says Nawa who adds that all municipalities have their own challenges but those are yet to be tackled.

He also spoke about the controversial merge of the Randfontein Local Municipality and the Westonaria Local Municipality into one municipality.”

He said that if implemented, this would result in shared services among the two municipalities.
