Resident stops thief in his tracks

The suspect and his accomplice were caught red handed stealing railway iron worth an estimated R25 000.

One man has been arrested after he was caught red handed stealing railway iron worth an estimated R25 000 at the Westonaria Railway Station on 17 March at approximately 1pm.

The arrest was made by local residents Jaco Ricci and Kallie Schwartz who spotted the suspect and an accomplice cutting railway iron and loading it onto a trolley.

According to Ricci, the suspects were ready to leave the area when he made the shocking discovery

“We spotted the men who were looking rather suspicious and decided to investigate,” says Ricci.

“We walked to the railway station and upon our arrival, we saw what they were doing and decided to confront them.

“Both suspects immediately fled from the scene on foot and we gave chase.

“We managed to catch up to one of them and immediately arrested him,” says Ricci.

He adds that police officers were then called to the scene and they took the suspect into custody.

“I am glad that we were able to catch the suspect and we are positive that he will reveal the identity of his accomplice,” says Ricci.

“If we want to make our communities crime-free it must start with us being the eyes and ears of the police and reporting any suspicious activities.”
