DA lays charges against ANC gunman

The man was spotted with a firearm during violent protest actions in Bekkersdal on 13 March.

DA Gauteng Premier candidate Mmusi Maimane and the leadership of the Greater Westonaria Residents Association have laid criminal charges against the ANC as well as an ANC member caught toting a firearm in Bekkersdal last week.

The image of the man was published in the Citizen where it caused much uproar in the community and on social media.

This was during a fresh round of violence that erupted in the area when the ANC tried to hold a door-to-door election campaign, much to the disgust of the local community.

“The Bekkersdal Concerned Residents Association and I met this morning to discuss last week’s attack as well as the service delivery crisis in the area,” says Maimane.

“We agreed that we would jointly lay charges against the ANC in terms of Section 9(2)(b) of the Electoral Code of Conduct which forbids gun-toting at political events

“We also agreed that we would lay charges against local ANC leader and Westonaria municipal employee Nelson Mdayi in terms of section 84 of the Firearms Control Act which forbids the reckless use of a firearm in public,” says Maimane.

He adds that the Bekkersdal Residents Association also informed him of the rampant corruption at the Westonaria Local Municipality.

“We agreed that the inclusion of corrupt politicians like Humphrey Memezi and Dina Pule on the ANC candidate’s list demonstrates a total lack of interest in clean government.

“Residents believe we are being led by “thugs and hooligans”

“Instead of cleaning up its act, Zuma’s ANC wants to rule by bullets.

“The bullets of the police and the ANC itself have already claimed lives in Durban Deep and Sebokeng.

“Today we are acting in solidarity with protesting residents to stop this political thuggery,” says Maimane.
