Bekkersdal ANC gun man investigated

The ANC in Gauteng is set to discuss the case of an ANC man that was caught red handed carrying a firearm during the violent protest action in Bekkersdal on 13 March after an ANC door-to-door campaign had gone wrong.

The image of the man was published in the Citizen has gone viral on social media and has caused uproar among residents of the area with many questioning his intension with the firearm on the day of the riots.

The man is also believed to be a former ANC councilor, who is currently employed by in the office of the Speaker within the Westonaria Local Municipality.

According to Provincial ANC spokesperson Nkenke Kekana, the party’s Chief Whip in the Gauteng legislature, Brian Hlongwa, will receive two reports into the identity of the man however has refused to confirm media reports indicating that the man is a former ANC councilor and local party leader Nelson Mdayi.

“The name does not matter; but what matters is what he was doing. Our only gripe is that if he is carrying a gun, he should not do so in ANC colours.”

“We also want to know if the firearm was licensed and what its role was there.” Says Kekana.

West Rand District executive mayor Mpho Nawa together Economic Development MEC Eric Xayiya and co-operative governance and traditional affairs MEC Ntombi Mekgwe had gone to the area to campaign for the party when they were pelted with stones and chased out of the community.

Residents of the area said that the ANC bigwigs should not be campaigning for votes in their township because Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane had called their votes ‘dirty’ votes late last year.
