Power cuts over for now

Consumers are still urged to use electricity sparingly.

Eskom has announced that they will not be having any more power outages throughout the country, but residents of Randfontein and Westonaria are still urged to use electricity sparingly during the rainy season to avoid further load shedding.

The power utility announced a massive power emergency on 6 March which saw various parts of the country without power from as early as 9am on the day.

This was said to be caused by the heavy rains that left most of its coal supplies wet.

The Herald spoke to local residents who were left without power on the day and according to them, they were prepared ahead of time for the load shedding owing to announcements in the media.

According to Westonaria Local Municipality spokesperson Kgabane Madiehe, Westonaria and its surrounds did not have any blackouts during this time and only had the normal power cuts.

“The only power outages we experienced were those caused by lightning and we attended to those immediately.

“At no point did we have major power interruptions,” says Madiehe.

Randfontein Local Municipality spokespersons Lucky Chiya also says residents of Randfontein did not experience any power cuts during the same period since 6 March.

“We have not had any reports of power cuts since Eskom announced that it was back on track.

“The only power cuts that were experienced during that period were those possibly caused by our power stations as we are currently revamping them.”
