Man shot while trying to steal firearm

The man tried to grab the officer's firearm in a bid to escape arrest. A shot went of during the struggle.

A man has been shot in the leg after trying to relieve a Randfontein police officer of his firearm.

The incident occurred on 6 March in the Randfontein CBD near the BP Garage on 6th Street after police officers noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in the area.

Officers watched the vehicle and eventually three suspicious men emerged and walked to the vehicle.

The officers approached the men and one of them tried to grab an officer’s firearm in an attempt to escape arrest.

A shot went off during the struggle and the man was wounded.

The man was arrested and taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Officers also managed to arrest the other two suspects.

It turns out that the vehicle was stolen during a house robbery in Koster.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson, Captain Appel Ernst, a search of the vehicle turned up numerous items believed to have been stolen during a string of recent local house robberies.
