Municipality fires back at allegations

The Westonaria Local Municipality was accused of buying votes ahead of the national elections.

The Westonaria Local Municipality has fired back at allegations of them buying votes ahead of the national elections by transporting ANC members to registration stations during the last voter registration weekend on 9 and 10 February.

According to Westonaria municipal spokesperson, Kgabane Madiehe, these allegations are made by people who want to discredit the municipality.

The allegations were made by Westonaria DA Public Representative (PR) Councillor Colin Turner who said that he witnessed municipal workers using state resources to transport ANC supporters to different voter registration stations in Westonaria on the weekend.

“I witnessed municipal vehicles being used to ferry ANC supporters to the different voting stations and I have it on camera to prove my claims,” says Turner.

According to Madiehe this is nothing but a cheap tactic to discredit the municipality and the ruling party.

“All the councillor has to his claims is that people who were driving the taxi were wearing yellow T-shirts and I strongly doubt that those were ANC members.

“The councillor doesn’t have sufficient or convincing evidence to back up is allegations.

“If anything, it is irresponsible and disturbing that some political organisations are hell-bent on putting the municipality into disrepute,” says Kgabane.

He adds that people should stop cheap political point scoring and focus on their political party’s manifesto’s ahead of the national elections.
