Municipality accused of buying votes

A municipal branded minibus was apparently used to ferry ANC supporters to different voting stations during the final voters registration weekend.

The ANC within the Westonaria Local Municipality has come under the spotlight for the wrong reasons once again and stands accused of using state resources to transport ANC supporters to different voter’s registration stations in Westonaria during the final voters registration weekend on 9 and 10 February.

These are allegations made by Westonaria DA Public Representative (PR) Councilor Colin Turner.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw people being ferried by a municipal branded minibus,” says Turner.

“I then personally contacted the Municipal Manager to find out who granted permission for this.

“The only response I received from him was that he knows nothing about the incident despite having told him that I have proof in my possession,” says Turner.

He adds that to test the waters, he requested that the minibus be sent out to pick up DA supporters and transport them to their destination where they could register to vote, however, that was never done.

“I cannot stress how wrong it is to abuse state resources especially in Westonaria because that municipality is financially bankrupt.

“The council thinks that municipal property belongs to them as the ANC.

“Apart from that, this goes to show the kind of people we are dealing with.

“We are dealing with a government that would literally do anything and perhaps everything to win people’s votes despite their failure to deliver,” says Turner who adds that this matter should be looked into.

The Herald is in possession of the images depicting the incident.

Municipal spokesperson Kgabane Madiehe was contacted for comment and says that he will forward the matter to the relevant department and can only give feedback after this.
