While following up on an article about a Randfontein traffic officer knocking down a local pedestrian while allegedly under the influence of alcohol, the Herald found that nothing has been done by the Randfontein Traffic Department since the incident occurred late last year.
No investigation has been initiated and Randfontein Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo apparently has misplaced the details of the case.
The Herald reported on 6 December that an apparently drunk traffic officer and his colleagues were driving in Toekomsrus when they smashed into a pedestrian, at the corner of Strawberry and Visrivier Street, who was walking on the sidewalk.
Residents of the area rushed to the man’s aid and the officers were quick to remove their name badges when they came closer.
According to bystanders the officers obviously were drunk and smelled strongly of alcohol.
To get to the bottom of this, the Herald furnished Mampondo with the number plate of officer’s vehicle in hope that an investigation would be under way.
When the Herald approached Mampondo for an update on the case, it came to light that nothing has been done yet.
Mampondo since has asked the Herald to resubmit the details of the case to him.
