Randfontein voter registrations: no stats on record

The IEC apparently forgot to take count of the amount of registered voters before registrations for the 2014 elections commenced.

While there was massive disruptions to the final voter registration in Bekkersdal on 8 and 9 February, The Herald can reveal that the IEC in Randfontein does not seem to have a clue as to how Randfontein residents fared during this period.

This was revealed when the Herald requested statistics of residents who registered to vote during the weekend in the different communities in Randfontein.

According to an official at the Randfontein IEC, the commission does not have statistics of residents who registered to vote thus far for the 2014 National and Provincial Elections in their possession.

“The only statistics we have currently are those of residents who have registered to vote since the inception of democracy.

“Currently we are sitting at 79 745 people on the voters roll.

“We cannot separate the statistics to have a true sense as to how many new registrations we have and that is simply because we didn’t make a print out of the statistics prior to the registration weekends,” says the official.

Despite asking for these statistics for weeks on end, the IEC did not think to impart this information until now.
