Resident helps police locate stolen car

He was driving to Westonaria when he spotted the vehicle travelling towards Mohlakeng and decided to follow it to its destination.

Randfontein police officers together with local residents were able to clamp down on a suspicious house in Mohlakeng on Mokate Street where a stolen vehicle was recovered

This was on 16 February and the vehicle in question is a blue Toyota Yaris T3, which was reported stolen after it went missing from a parking lot at a prominent mall on the West Rand.

The car went missing on 4 February and according to a local resident who does not wish to be named, the car belongs to his girlfriend and the incident occured while she was in the cinema watching a movie.

According to him, he was driving to Westonaria when he spotted the vehicle travelling towards Mohlakeng and decided to follow it to its destination.

Upon arrival, he contacted the police and informed them of his suspicions and that is how they made the discovery.

“We are not too certain how the incident occurred but my girlfriend was watching a movie at that time.

“She then walked to the parking lot and was shocked to find that her vehicle was nowhere to be seen,” says the man.

He adds that while in shock, the girlfriend requested to view the CCTV footage and discovered that another car had parked next to her vehicle and saw one occupant exiting the car.

“Just minutes later, she spotted both vehicles exiting the basement parking lot and passing through the boom gates,” says the man.

He adds that the incident was reported at the Honeydew police station where the case was under investigation.

However on the day of the bust, the suspect was approached about how he acquired the vehicle and he claimed that he had bought it recently.

The car has since been confiscated by the police for further investigation.

While the man is confident and relieved that the car recovered belongs to his girlfriend, he says that malls should tighten up their security measures at all times.
