Mayor to host annual bursary awards

The mayor is expected to issue bursaries worth R1 million.

The Randfontein Local Municipality is set to host their annual mayoral bursary awards ceremony to honour top achieving matrics from the class of 2013 throughout Randfontein.

This will be on 30 January at the IEC Hall at 6pm.

During this time, the mayor will be expected to hand out bursaries to the tune of R1 million to top achieving learners from different schools throughout Randfontein.

According to Randfontein Local Municipality Executive Mayor Sylvia Thebenare, this forms part of government’s initiative to prioritise education and promote a culture of skills development among the youth.

“I think it is worth mentioning that Randfontein matriculants are constantly making us proud and recognition is well in order,” says Thebenare.

“They have continued to put our town on the map and I know that among them, future leaders, doctors and dignitaries will be produced.

“It goes without saying that we as the municipality need to step in and assist where we can,” says Thebenare.

She adds that the bursary scheme has changed people’s lives over the years and saw previous Randfontein learners become the best that they could be through education.

“We are proud that our youth is taking advantage of this opportunity and we are happy to see their lives change for the better.

“I strongly believe in the saying that if you teach a child, you teach a nation and we have seen this come to life through education.” says Thebenare.
