Potholes: Municipality pulling wool over residents’ eyes

Municipal workers were caught red handed filling the potholes with sand instead of tar.

The Randfontein Local Municipality has been pulling wool over the eyes of residents with regard to the fixing of potholes on Randfontein roads.

The municipality has been adamant that it is fixing potholes as fast and as efficiently as possible, but a Herald investigation has proven that this is not the case and that potholes are being “fixed” by filling them with gravel and topping that with a thin layer of tar.

The situation has gotten so bad that most of the roads in Randfntein are barely accessible and reports of residents suffering damage to their vehicles as a result are flooding in on a daily basis.

The Herald took to the streets with Ward 9 DA councillor Peter Dick to investigate and found that municipal workers are also fed-up with the situation.

“We are just trying to do our jobs,” says one worker who wishes not to be named.

“We do our best with the potholes, and we know that filling them with sand is not effective, but what can we do?

“Management tells us there is no budget for the materials that we require and that we need to continue filling the potholes with sand.

“We’re now running out of tar completely and in some areas, we’re not even putting in a tar layer.”

The Herald has submitted questions with regards to the potholes to the Randfontein local Municipality, but to no avail.

Numerous phonecalls and emails to municipal spokesperson Lucky Chiya has fallen on deaf ears.

One furious resident, who has managed to get hold of Peter Mathebula, the manager in charge of roads in the Department of Infrastructure, says that Mathebula screamed at her before slamming the phone in her ear.

“This is totally ridiculous,” says DA Ward 9 councillor, Peter Dick.

“What has happened to all the money set aside in the budget for the repair and maintenance of roads?

“The fact is that the Randfontein Local Municipality has not done any of the things it has said it would do.

“And now they have run out of money? It does not make sense.”
