More calls for spokesman’s suspension

More calls emerge for the suspension of fraud-accused Randfontein spokesman.

Another call for the suspension of fraud-accused Randfontein Local Municipality spokesperson Lucky Chiya was made, this time, from West Rand Cope leader, Solly May.

According to May, Chiya is viewed as the Mayor’s right-hand man in Randfontein and the criminal charges against him only serves to bring the credibility of the Randfontein Local Municipality into question.

Chiya, who is reportedly under sequestration, was arrested on 3 December for allegedly fraudulently using a cancelled ID document to procure credit.

“Chiya’s possible involvement in any crime is bound to reflect negatively on the Randfontein Local Municipality,” says May.

“If he is not suspended pending the outcome of this issue, what message will that send to the people of Randfontein?

“The municipality is already widely viewed as being a corrupt institution.

“His suspension pending the outcome of his trial will send a message to people that the Randfontein Local Municipality will not take chances where corruption is concerned.

“If he is found to be innocent, he can be reinstated with no harm done, but if he is found guilty of the charges brought against him and he was not suspended it will reflect very badly on the municipality.”

Meanwhile, Chiya has refused to comment on the charges brought against him, saying only that his legal team has advised him against speaking on the subject.

Chiya is currently out on R5 000 bail and his case will be heard in court on 27 January.
