Police declare war on illegal alcohol traders

Approximately 1 500 litres of alcohol have been destroyed in December alone.

Randfontein police have declared a war on the illegal trade in alcohol and destroyed over 1500 litres of alchol throughout December.

This comes after carrying out inspections in the many liquor outlets, taverns and shebeens in Randfontein where many operators were found operating without valid liquor licenses.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst, more than 12 people were arrested during this operation.

Ernst is adamant that those who are still operating without liquor licenses will be caught and brought to book.

“It has come to our attention that a lot of liquor outlets and taverns are still operating without liqour licenses,” says Ernst.

“Alcohol abuse is a major contributor toward crime in Randfontein and we will not tolerate the illegal sale of alcohol.”

Ernst has appealed to traders in the alcohol industry not to sell alcohol to the children under the age of 18.

“People buying and selling alcohol have a duty to do so responsibly.

“Anybody who disregards this duty will have to face the full might of the law,” says Ernst.

Ernst has also urged people to consume alcohol responsibly.

“Alcohol abuse is a major contributor to road accidents, domestic violence, assault, rape, and even murder and attempted murder.

“Please be aware that overindulging in alcohol can be dangerous.”
